Fat Transfer is a technique whereby the fat of a person is harvested by the liposuction technique, processed and then re-injected back into another area.
The sites most commonly used for harvesting fat are the lower abdomen, thighs or buttock area. A tiny incision is made within the crease line and a fine liposuction cannula used for suctioning the fat. This fat is then centrifuged and then used to restore volume to the face area.
As we age, there is loss of volume of fat in the face especially in the cheek area which gives a sunken and aged appearance. Fat helps restore this volume and stem cells which get transferred along with the fat help improve skin texture. Some degree of fat resorption [up to 30%] can occur post procedure. It is important to realise that fluctuations in weight will affect the transferred fat.
The procedure can be done under a local or general anaesthetic depending upon the area needing treatment and takes 1-1.5 hours. Patients can go home later the same day and back to work in 3-4 days.
In cases of hemifacial atrophy or facial asymmetry fat can be transferred to the depleted side to get a more symmetrical appearance.
