Prominent ears are congenital [from birth] and may result in increased self-consciousness and distress as a consequence of being teased by peers.
In children we wait till the child is at least 6-7 years [which is when the ear reaches full growth] before any correction procedure is performed. The operation is done under a General Anaesthetic and takes 1-1.5 hours. A head bandage is applied which is removed after 5 days and then a headband needs to be worn [especially at night] for 4-6 weeks.
Ear piercing especially in the lobe area can stretch and elongate with wearing heavy earrings and may even cause the earlobe to split.
This can be easily repaired under a local anaesthetic and takes 30-45 minutes. Sutures are removed after 8 days and the earlobe re-taped. Massaging the earlobe for 4-6 weeks before ear piercing is advised to minimise signs of scarring.
In some patient,s who have this happen repeatedly because of soft skin a cartilage graft is used at the time of repair to avoid a recurrence.
