Ageing in the face manifests as wrinkles [fine or deep lines], loss of subcutaneous tissue, descent of the malar [cheek] fat pad, jowls and sagging of the neck skin.
Facelift is a surgical procedure whereby the excess skin is removed, the fascia tightened and fat pads repositioned to give a more youthful appearance. Tightening of the neck skin can be done at the same time if needed.
Options
There are many techniques to perform a facelift procedure and include mini facelift, skin only facelift, skin and SMAS [fascia] tightening facelift. The procedure best suited for you will be decided on consultation but often we do a skin and SMAS fascia tightening procedure which gives a natural appearance and longevity to the result.
Procedure
The operation is performed under a Local Anaesthetic with sedation or General Anaesthetic and takes 3-4 hours to perform. The incision is placed just in front of the ear and curves below the earlobe and then to the hairline behind the ear. If the upper part of the face also needs rejuvenation then the scar is hidden in the front hairline.
The fascia is tightened along different vector lines for a natural result and the excess skin is removed. A soft drain is inserted which is removed in the dressing change usually the next day after which the patient can go home. Sutures are removed after 5 days.
Potential Risks
As with any operation there is a small risk of bleeding or infection. If bleeding or a hematoma does occur it may be necessary to remove this as it may impact skin healing. Other risks include adverse scarring or damage to branches of the facial nerve which may cause weakness of the brow or lower lip.
