Wrinkles, loss of facial volume, thinning of the skin and pigmentary changes are all features of the ageing face. Contributing to these are the effects of gravity, sun damage and smoking.
Various modalities of non surgical treatments such as Botox® , Hyaluronic acid fillers, Microneedling, PRP[Plasma rich platelet] therapy, Laser and PDO threads are available rejuvenate the skin and provide a more youthful appearance.
Botulinium toxin type A is a neurotoxin which has been used extensively in aesthetic Plastic Surgery for the reduction of fine line and wrinkles. Wrinkles occur due to the contraction of the facial muscles [dynamic wrinkles] and as we age a combination of reduced collagen and elastin and repeated muscle contraction results is a permanent line/wrinkle.
Botox® relaxes the muscle preventing contraction and this results in softening of the lines restoring the youthful relaxed appearance. Very often patients present saying that they appear angry all the time without meaning to and this is usually due to spasm of the muscle in the glabellar region which Botox®can help relax.
The areas most commonly injected are glabella, forehead and crowfeet areas. It is also good for the neckbands [platysmal bands]. Full effect is seen in 5-7 days and lasts 4-6 months. Topical Anaesthetic is applied and very fine needles are used for injection. It is done in the outpatient clinic and takes 10-15 minutes.
Another use of Botulinium toxin is for hyperhydrosisor excessive sweating. This condition can cause social embarrassment and psychological distress for the persons suffering from it. Areas affected are axilla, palms and soles of the feet. A small quantity of the Botulinium toxin is injected in a grid like pattern and gives excellent results. It takes 1-2 weeks to have full effect and lasts 4-6 months
