Brachioplasty or Arm lift is a procedure to tackle excess or loose skin in the arm area. As we age the skin on the arms tend to sag [Bingo wings] and exercise helps tone the underlying muscle but does not tackle the skin excess. This is more pertinent in the case of weight loss and following bariatric surgery.
The procedure is done under a General Anaesthetic as a day case. The loose skin is excised and the scars are placed in the axillary area and undersurface of the arm. Strapping of the arms is done and later changed to a pressure garment for better contour and must be worn for 3-4 weeks. Drains if placed are removed after 1-2 days. Patients go back to work in 7-10 days and full activity in 6-8 weeks.
Patients with heavy arms and good skin tone are better suited for liposuction.
This is a body contouring procedure where excess, hanging skin is removed from the thigh region. Following extensive weight loss or post bariatric procedure and even with ageing where there is loss of subcutaneous fat the skin tends to sag and form folds in the thigh region. This excess skin can be removed under a general anaesthetic with the scars being placed in the crease line and inner thigh to give a smoother contoured appearance. Drains if placed are removed after 1-2 days.
Patients are required to wear a pressure garment for 3-4 weeks and can return to work in 10-14 days and full activity in 8-10 weeks.
Patients who have good skin tone and only excess fat in the thighs are more suited for a liposuction procedure.
