As we age there is loss of skin tone and elasticity which causes folds in the upper eyelid giving a hooded appearance. In the lower eyelid the loose skin and fat pads gives the eyes a puffy appearance. Both result in giving the person a tired and aged look.
Blepharoplasty is a procedure whereby the excess skin and fat is removed from the eyelid area to give a more youthful appearance to the face.
This procedure is performed under a local anaesthetic and takes 30-45 minutes. Excess skin is removed and if there is excess fat this is also dealt with. Patients go home later the same day. The sutures are removed after 4-5 days, swelling and bruising is minimized by use of cold compress and settles in 10-14 days. The scar is well hidden in the skin crease and fades well.
This is performed under local anaesthesia with sedation or a General anaesthetic and takes 1 hour to perform. The incision is made just under the lower lid margin, the excess fat is removed or repositioned and excess skin trimmed. The wound is sutured with non absorbable sutures and a light dressing is applied which is removed after 2 hour and cold compresses commenced. Patients go home later the same day. Sutures are removed after 4-5 days and the bruising settles in 10-14 days. Scars in this area heal very well, leaving minimal telltale signs.
Some patients have excess skin and fat in both upper and lower lids and this is addressed in the same operation. This can be done as a day case or overnight stay depending on patient preference and comfort. The procedure is done under local anaesthesia and sedation or a General anaesthetic and takes 1-2 hours. A compression dressing is applied which is removed after 2 hours and cold compresses commenced. Sutures are removed after 4-5 days and bruising settles in 10-14 days.
